The Complete A-Z Guide On Getting Started with Fasting To Improve Your Health & Wellness

How have we become so lost and disconnected? This was the question I asked over and over again after I completed my first 7 Day Juice Fast and then moved onto Intermittent Fasting daily, eating in an 8-hour window. This all happened almost 3 years ago from the time of writing this post. And in the past 3 years, I have eaten daily in an 8-hour window or less. And have since done 2-4 Extended Juice Fasts each year and even a few smaller water fasts.

From all the fasting have come a tonne of side effects. First of all, I reversed adrenal fatigue symptoms that I had, and now I can power through the entire day with more energy than I ever remember having. Another side effect has been healing leaky gut and digestive issues. I used to always get acne as a teenager and into my early 20’s, that has disappeared and never returned either.

I have more focus, clarity and the brain fog has gone.

Fasting in combination with a whole foods plant-based diet has completely transformed my life. I’ve not once been sick in 3 years (except for that 1 time I added too much Reishi Mushroom extract to my smoothie, but that is a whole other story haha).

I look at the way I used to live my life, eating from the time I wake up, until the time I go to sleep at night. Sometimes 4, 5 or even up to 7 meals at one point, every single day. There is no time in history as a human being have we ever done that, think about it. It just doesn’t add up.

Fasting has been a part of who we are since the beginning of humanity. Ever since the hunter and gatherer days, where we hunted for fruits and gathered nuts and seeds. Some of the longest and healthiest living cultures eat only 1 or 2 meals per day.

I remember back to my first 7 Day Juice I did 3 years ago I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t really know if what I was doing was right! I was scared, people were telling me I was crazy. But something inside of me kept calling me forward and made me follow through with what I said I was going to do. I remember on day 5 I was feeling on top of the world.

I dreamt in that moment to create a community of like-minded people who could share inspiration, motivation and assist others on their fasting journey. Little did I know at that point that we would create the world’s largest online fasting conference and have the best experts in the world teaching on that event.

Over the years I have come to know that fasting requires a holistic approach to make the biggest difference and to keep you on track with your fasting goals long term.

1. Mental and Emotional Success

As with most things, if you can lay down a solid foundation with your mental and emotional success the rest of the journey becomes much easier. It is no different with fasting. In fact, it is almost more important with fasting. The idea of skipping just 1 meal for many people can be life-threatening (in their minds) let alone fasting on water only 40 days.

So you really need to toughen up the mind and destroy some of your limiting beliefs around fasting, food, healing and just life in general. When you listen and hear stories of how the leading experts in the world have helped millions of people worldwide with fasting it definitely helps to expand the mind.

Even some of the experts you know and love have their own stories of how fasting has helped them become better physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. One of my favourite stories was hearing from Dr John Demartini, leading psychology expert and a star of the big time hit movie, The Secret.

Dr Demartini says if it wasn’t for the fasting he did in his late teens, he would not be here today. Check it out.

Next up in this section is one of my all-time favourite health expert, Marc David. You know when you meet someone and talk to them you know they are just a great person inside and out? Yep, well that is Marc David. Not only that, but he has built one of the largest and most trusted businesses in America that deals with the mindset around food consumption. From slow eating to giving yourself the time and respect a meal deserves and so much more. Marc David shares with us that when you want to go on a fast, the ideal mindset to come into the fast with is a place of inspiration. Not desperation. He also shares that Shamans and prominent ancient legends used fasting as a means to gain mental and emotional clarity, almost as a superpower. Not because they wanted to lose weight (although fasting will help with that too)

 

2. Detoxification & Nutrition

Fasting by definition is unsustainable. Even though you feel incredible a week or so into a juice or water fast, unfortunately at this point in our human lives it is not sustainable to continue living a life that way. Dr Michael Greger shares this viewpoint as well and we thought who better to let us know about the most important steps to follow to make sure that when we are not fasting, we get the most from our nutrition. If you have the right nutrition plan before and after a fast, it allows your fast to become so much powerful. Secondly, if we are talking about Intermittent Fasting, then we need to make sure we are nourishing the body with the right nutrients, vitamins, and minerals so that we can build a healthy and strong body. As Dr Michael Greger shares with us, there is only 1 diet that has been proven to reverse the number 1 disease killer of men and women in the world, so shouldn’t that be the default diet until proven otherwise? I 100% agree, how about you?

By understanding that on an extended juice fast or water fast we may begin to experience some heavy detox symptoms then we sort of know what we are in for. Detoxing does not just happen at the physical level though when going through an extended juice fast or water fast. Detoxing will also happen on a mental, emotional and even spiritual level as well. That is why we love detox specialist Dr Deanna Minich, Ph.D., who talks about The Whole Detox. And what that really means and why it is important.

Someone who we love because of his direct approach to life and tough love attitude is Markus Rothkranz. I get a lot of people who ask me what the best way to break a fast is and I always tell them to stay on raw food for as long as possible. In our eyes, Markus Rothkranz is a leader in the Raw Food scene, and he shares with us that by eating raw food it doesn’t always mean it has to be cold, but you can still heat up the food to a warm temperature to enjoy a wider variety of foods. Just make sure you are not heating it up so much that it destroys the enzymes in the food. Knowing this can help you stay on a raw food diet much longer to reap the incredible benefits from it.

 

3. Intermittent Fasting

One of the most talked about “diet” concepts out there today is Intermittent Fasting. I hate the word diet, and it is actually offensive to even consider Intermittent Fasting as a diet in today’s world as it is so much more. There are many different ways to approach Intermittent Fasting. Some ways are more popular than others. In my research, I have found that the two most popular ways are the 5:2 diet and the 16/8 Method. The 5:2 approach requires you to eat normally for 5 days of the week and then on 2 non-consecutive days you eat 500-600 calories. The 16/8 method requires you to eat each day within an 8-hour window, typically by skipping breakfast.

There have been a huge amount of benefits proven by science by all types of intermittent fasting and if there was 1 person in the world who can put them in a way that is easy to understand it is Tyler Tolman. This man is one of the most knowledgeable experts that we have ever had the pleasure of co-creating with. If you want to know anything about fasting or about the truth of health, this is the man you turn to. Here you can see why.

If you are looking for more of a professional opinion around intermittent Fasting then this is the man you need to turn to. He is the doctors’ doctor, Dr Daniel Pompa. What I admire about Dr Pompa is that he is very willing to practice what he preaches. And not just with himself, but his family as well. His son regularly jumps on his video’s and live streams sharing the results that he has learned by being the son of Dr Pompa. When I first heard him talk about adaptation, I was intrigued. It triggered something within me to continue to learn more. That is why when he agreed to share with us what he knew with our audience, I was excited. The idea of having a re-feed day every now and then sounded pretty good to me simply because I love eating, but when I discovered that it actually helps the body in many different ways I knew it was something I needed to incorporate into my life more regularly.

 

4. Extended Juice Fasting & Water Fasting

When you think extended juice fasting your mind goes to 1 man who put himself out there to over 30 million people worldwide in his movie, Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. Mr Joe Cross is the star of the movie, the guy who was once overweight and sick but after fasting for 60 days and continuing with a plant-based whole foods diet, he no longer was – Fat, sick and nearly dead. Not only that but Joe Cross is one of the best storytellers I have heard, and simplifies how the body works which works for me because I hate the technicalities and fancy names of it all. Joe also lives not too far down the road so it is always a fun catch up when we get to hang out with him.

The second person you would think about when it comes to fasting is a man who is possibly the most interesting man in the world, Don Tolman. Ever since he was 18 years old he has been on a path of self-discovery and a quest for the truth about health. He has lived with ancient cultures and traveled to all continents around the world learning from these people. He discovered that health is much more simple than we are led to believe. The reason that we are led to believe it is so complicated is that health care is a trillion dollar industry, and if we were all healthy, the greedy men and women at the top of these companies wouldn’t get their multi-million dollar bonuses and salaries each year. When Don Tolman speaks you don’t just listen to the words but you feel the truth in them. What is inspiring is that over the decades he has been sharing this information he has helped hundreds of mainstream doctors realise that what they do does not help people, and they have quit their careers to put people on juice and water fasts instead.

And finally, how could you forget New York Times bestselling author, Dr Joel Fuhrman. The doctor who was over-seeing Joe Cross on his 60-day juice fast on ‘Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead’. Dr Fuhrman has been in medical practice for over 25 years and has guided his patients through fasting to reverse virtually any disease.

 

5. Transformation Fasting

Transformation Fasting is a term I coined earlier in 2017. It encompasses all of the 4 previous steps we just talked about, as well as more of a spiritual approach to it. Like I said at the beginning of this post, the benefits you receive from fasting is not just physical. In fact, what I always tell people is that the physical benefits you receive from fasting is the smallest benefits of all. The real gifts come in the form of mental, emotional and spiritual benefits.

Dr Gabriel Cousens has a concept of Spiritual Fasting as well. He has been fasting himself for many decades and the New York Times recognised him as a “Fasting Guru”. He shares with us that he is stronger now at 74 years of age than when he was a star athlete in his 20’s. He puts it all down to fasting.

The GreenSmoothie Girl, Robyn Openshaw, has so much wisdom around fasting. She shares that before a massive task she takes the time to fast so that it raises her vibration so that she is coming from a much higher place, with greater clarity and mental efficiency. She is no stranger to fasting, in fact, she loves it. And she agrees that it is a great way to not just stay healthy but to take your life to a greater new level as well.

And how could we forget JP Sears. When I first interviewed JP Sears I was instantly intrigued. Even though he famous for his comedy health sketches, he is someone who has a huge amount of knowledge and wisdom to share health and wellness. During the interviews I have done with him it always felt as if I was in his trance, downloading wisdom on an unconscious level with him. His words are poetic, and his injections of comedy make every chat with him lots of fun.
